The Elm Grove Elite, EGSC's U12A Girls select soccer team, captured second place in the powerful 2003 Palatine Celtic Cup Tournament, played August 30-Sept 1 (Labor Day weekend) in Palatine, Illinois.
The girls opened the tournament with identical 3-0 wins over Fire Jrs Academy and the host Palatine Celtic Hornets. On Sunday the girls defeated the Glenview Titan Gold by a 2-1 margin. The win gave the girls a 3-0 record in pool play and advanced the team into the tournament semi-final.
In semi, played early Sunday evening, the team battled to a 3-3 tie with NWI United (Indiana). As darkness descended, the two teams went into a shootout, with the Elite victorious by a 3-2 score. The win advanced the girls into the tournament's championship game.
In the championship, the Elite fell to the powerful ELA Tigers (Illinois) by a 2-0 margin, awarding them second place. While disappointed with the loss, the team took solice in the fact that (according to the Soccer Girls USA rankings) the ELA Tigers girls U12 team was the top ranked team in Illinois, and was also ranked 1st in Region II, and 4th in the entire nation.
