Arsenal Claims 2003 MYRSL U14 Grand Championship

U14 Boys Arsenal Coach Matt Barr and his Elm Grove Arsenal U14 Boys team are at it again. The team finished a close second in U14-A league play this spring. The WYSA / MYRSL scheduled a final playoff game for the first place (Cedarburg Strikers, coached by Milwaukee Wave all-star Victor Nogueira) and second place (Barr's Elm Grove Arsenal) teams to determine the overall winner, or "Grand Champion" for the league.

In this championship game played at Cedarburg's St. Mary's soccer complex, the Arsenal came out victorious with a 1-0 win, and staked their claim to the U14 championship!!

The game was closely contested. Defense was strong for both teams, although each had opportunities to score. Midway through the first half, sweeper Cory Anderson scored a nice header goal off a free kick (almost a corner kick) from Jake Hartlmeier for the game's first and only score. Michael Dickson nearly added another later with a break-away opportunity, but missed wide.

Coach Barr named his goalkeeper Drew Quinn as the game's MVP. Quinn came up with some huge saves, including stopping a PK awarded to Cedarburg. Quinn also added to a solid defensive effort with some nice footwork and ball control on the back line, along with Anderson, Danny Schmidt and Daniel Van Aartsen. Coach Barr was also pleased that the team was able to come through with the win, despite missing some key players who were on vacation following the end of school this past week.

Congratulations boys, job well done! You earned that huge trophy, and should wear those championship T-shirts with pride.
